"Coalescence"
Exhibition Dates: October 1st - 23rd, 2005
(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is pleased to feature local glass artist Beth Fishman in her first solo exhibition with the gallery. In Coalescence, multiple disks of clear glass come together to create heavenly, wall-mounted compositions in the form of angelšs wings and abstract cloud shapes.
"This body of work investigates the relationship between the tangible and intangible worlds, and how they complement one another," says Fishman. The varying sizes and shifting planes of the translucent disks cast dramatic shadows that are as much a part of the work as the glass itself. The pieces are enhanced and completed by the light, shadows, and negative space around them.
For this exhibition Fishman has developed a new way of working with glass, allowing for a more immediate expression of her vision than the traditional glassblowing methods. She is clearly inspired by this new technique: "this is a much more direct experience, like painting with the glass," says the artist. To make these pieces, she takes a "drop" of hot glass directly from the furnace and lets it fall onto a flat surface, varying the number, size, and configuration of these "drops" to create each composition. Some of the pieces incorporate sandblasted or mirrorized elements to produce variation in texture and the reflection of light.
Beth Fishman received her BA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. She has shown her work throughout the country, and has served as an instructor at Pratt Fine Arts Center (Seattle, WA), Appalachian Craft Center (Smithville, TN), Public Glass (San Francisco, CA), and Urban Glass (Brooklyn, NY). Fishman has worked as a designer and fabricator for interior designers and architects for the past eight years and is recognized for her innovative production designs.
"Coalscence" will be on display through October 23rd, 2005.
