"Scratching the Surface"

Exhibition Dates: June 4th - 24th 2004
Artist Reception: Thursday June 4th, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is proud to present a solo exhibition for West Coast glass artist David Hering. The exhibit consists of 12 vessels, each with unique backgrounds and layers of powdered color. The pieces are finished with a distinctive silver leaf technique consisting of overlapping edges, creating a hidden pattern of metallic texture only revealed when sandblasted.

Hering demonstrates his respect for nuance with an inviting palette and a subtly contoured vessel. "It is my belief that a unique artistic vision can lie within the contours of the humble vessel," declares Hering. "The surfaces are meant to be inviting. The graphic interplay of the residual silver and the colored ground of the vessel's exterior is crucial in my attempt for an individual expression."

David Hering's formal education includes a B.F.A. in Painting from the University of Minnesota and he received an M.A. and M.F.A in Painting from U.C. Berkeley in 1977. For the ensuing twenty years, he worked as a painter and was collected both publicly and privately. Though the artist switched mediums six years ago, he considers this background in painting to be the foundation of his artistic perspective. He began his glass studies at the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1998. He continued with courses at Pilchuck, Corning, Centro Studio Vetro in Venice, Italy and the Pittsburgh Glass Center.

"Scratching the Surface" will be on display through June 24th, 2004.
