"Color Theory"
Exhibition Dates: July 1st - 24th, 2005
(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is proud to present Color Theory, a solo exhibition featuring new work by New York glass artist Jamie Harris. Employing classic glass working techniques, Harris creates work with a decidedly modern sensibility. The artist's vibrantly hued, abstract sculptures, wall-mounted installations and fused glass panels celebrate the distinctive ways in which glass transmits, reflects and absorbs color and light.
Harris approaches his glass sculptural work from a more painterly perspective than traditional glass blowers. "Though I have intensely studied the Venetian tradition of blown glass, my work is greatly influenced by my study of design and fashion from the early Twentieth Century and is fueled more by color theory and abstract concept than reflections on historical glass," says Harris.
In his Mod series, Harris layers multiple hues within sleek, blown forms before carving deeply into the surface of the pieces. This extreme carving creates holes that destroy the functionality of the vessels, resulting in bold sculptural forms, and expose the multicolored layers within the pieces. The Mods explore the way color and its layering can evoke visceral, emotional responses in the viewer by exploiting the inherent connotations of specific colors and emphasizing their relationships within a piece. For this exhibition, Harris has incorporated several new forms, color combinations and carving techniques into the Mod series, which includes both wall-mounted and freestanding pieces.
Also included in Color Theory are simply shaped Incalmo Orb vessels, which sport wide bands of contrasting colors, and fused glass panels from the Color Field and Dot series. In the Color Field pieces, layers of glass are fused together in a kiln, and then carved away to create muted, abstract compositions. Harris' Dot panels are geometric color contrasts, pared down to their simplest expression.
Jamie Harris is an artist and teacher at UrbanGlass, the New York Experimental Workshop in Brooklyn, NY. A graduate of Brown University, he has studied at some of the most prestigious glass schools in the country including Pilchuck Glass School, the Rhode Island School of Design, Penland School of Crafts, Haystack School and the Corning Museum of Glass. His work can be seen at galleries throughout the United States.
"Color Theory" will be on display through July 24th, 2005.
