"Form and Intent"
Exhibition Dates: June 5th - June 25th, 2003
(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is proud to present "Form and Intent" an exhibition by featured Canadian artist, Jay Macdonell. On display June 5th through June 25th, the exhibition will showcase 14 pieces that incorporate several incalmo components that ultimately defy the functionality of the vessels. The opening artistıs reception will take place from 58 p.m. on Thursday, June 5th at Vetri, situated just one block north of the Seattle Art Museum.
Balance, tension and form are the basis for the relationships explored in "Form and Intent". Macdonell resolves these issues by connecting three separate blown-forms together, manipulating the proportions not only of the forms themselves but the piece as a whole. "How does the size of the top relate to the bottom and what happens if I alter the form? The size or volume may remain constant but the shape has altered the relationship. I am also very aware of the visual weight of color; the same form will carry greater or less weight proportionally depending on its color. Like stones balanced, the components relate to each other separately by small connections. These connections create a tension which forces the viewer to look beyond the obvious, and like the stones each component has a weight which when juxtaposed must be brought into balance. This is the reason I join these pieces together hot as opposed to gluing them. While gluing them would be easier, joining them hot allows me to change the form, to respond and interact with the piece; to bring balance." Jay Macdonell
Trained through a traditional apprenticeship, Macdonell has been working with glass since 1992. He currently works for Starfish Glassworks in Victoria, BC as a glassblower and gaffer. Jay has been both past president and exhibitions director for the BC Glass Arts Association and has served Pilchuck in various capacities such as TA, pole-turner, auction volunteer and as a glassblowing Elvis. During the 2003 summer term, he will TA for Preston Singletary and Katherine Grey. Jay has been nominated for the Saxe and Corning Awards for excellence and his work has recently been included in the Bronfmanıs prestigious Clairage Collection.
