"Glass Jewelry"

Exhibition Dates: December 1 - 31, 2006
Artist Reception: Thursday December 7th, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is proud to present Glass Jewelry, a joint exhibition for glass artists James Minson and Renata Crowe. The show is comprised of over 50 pieces of flameworked jewelry that push the bounds of wearable art and are experimental in both technique and style.

A third generation glass artist, James Minson creates exquisitely intricate works that stagger the imagination. This exhibition will include earrings, brooches and large neckpieces in addition to an assortment of new, experimental work. In one series, James uses recycled materials, such as tuna and paté cans, to create necklaces, which are a whimsical twist on his usual naturalistic style. Another new series includes tiny, cobalt bottles that can be worn as necklaces, and are described by Minson as "an exploration of form." James received his MA in Psychology and Art Therapy from Antioch University in Seattle, and his BA in Jewelry Making, Silversmithing and Glass from Sydney College of the Arts (Australia). He was born in Australia, and began glasswork at the age of fifteen. Minson has taught at Pilchuck (WA), Pratt (WA), Urban Glass (NY), Espace Verre (Montreal), The Penland School (NC), and The Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass (NY). He currently lives in Seattle, and his work is represented in many public and private collections.

Renata Crowe is always happy to have the "luxury" of a show, and states, "It pushes me to do what I really want to do - far more complicated and unusual pieces. It's self-indulgent in a way." Crowe emphasizes strength in numbers by using many components and orderly repetition in her jewelry. "I compare my work to a tree with many leaves," she says. "Creating a harmonious balance between glass and metal is the focus of my work, and symbolizes the patience, and balance of the natural world. The flower is nothing without the stem, as the plant is nothing without the root; both need to wait for the other to be complete." Renata's design background lies primarily in fashion - specifically millinery, and she graduated from the Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design (Vancouver, BC). She recently studied Glass Blowing at Red Deer College, and Jewelry Techniques with VSB Continuing Education. She currently resides in Vancouver, BC.

James Minson and Renata Crowe's"Glass Jewelry" will be on display through December 31st, 2006.
