"A Deeper Look"
Exhibition Dates: August 1st - 25th, 2004
(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is proud to present: A Deeper Look, an exhibition featuring new work by the husband and wife creative team Steven Gandolfo and Jean Salatino. The show highlights a selection of vibrantly colored, deeply carved, blown glass vessels. The elegant lines and organic shapes of the pieces are inspired by the artistsą experiences in nature and love for the process of glass making.
Salatino and Gandolfo's brightly monochromatic vessels are abstract designs, yet their shapes are suggestive of leaves, flowers, starbursts, and seed pods. The couple spends their free time working in their California garden, and their reverence for the outdoors is apparent in their work.
Each piece is meticulously carved and polished, revealing the brilliance of the glass and celebrating its relationship to light. The process of blowing and carving the pieces is extremely labor-intensive. Gandolfo blows the "blanks" for the pieces, which can be up to an inch thick, and Salatino carves them using a series of diamond wheels of gradually diminishing size. She cuts deeply into the pieces, not just giving them surface texture, but also creating facets and planes that catch and bend light. The carving process can take up to 40 hours to complete, and the finished piece often weighs less than half its original weight.
Both Jean Salatino and Steven Gandolfo were awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, CA. Jean has studied and taught at Pilchuck Glass School, and in 2001 received Pilchuck's prestigious Centerpiece Design Award, which is associated with their Annual Auction. Steven has worked as a gaffer and glass blowing assistant in Oakland, CA. The couple currently lives in Sonoma, CA.
"A Deeper Look" will be on display through August 25th, 2004.
