Karen began blowing glass part time in 1980 for an art glass company. Simultaneously she studied architecture at Ohio State University. It was an exciting and stimulating time studying design, math and science by day and blowing glass at night and on weekends. By 1983, glass became her sole passion. The current glasswork is an investigation into the human form donning the swimming ensemble, as well as suit coats, sweaters, and dresses. These graceful, and sometimes humorous, figures are influenced by neoclassical, art deco, and art nouveau sculpture and her personal experiences of and within a community and society.
