"Boundless"
Exhibition Dates: November 4th - 30th, 2004
(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is proud to present Boundless, a solo show featuring new work by local artist Chuck Lopez. The exhibition showcases a dozen of Lopez's abstract, mixed media sculptures. Each piece centers around a graceful, teardrop-shaped, blown glass component, which is combined with metal or rope to suggest a unique situation or relationship. One can easily identify with the sensuous, vulnerable forms and their predicaments in a direct, personal way; yet, because similar shapes are employed in each piece, they can also be seen on a more general, societal level.
Lopez's sculptures originate as mental images; however, his experience of these images often goes beyond the purely visual. While imagination and everyday experience provide a variety of possible forms with which he can work, the artist is compelled to create those that he does not fully understand. Intuition and a sense of mystery are extremely important to the development of each body of work.
"Intuition allows us to answer questions and make decisions when we do not have all the relevant information. My dependence on intuition stems from the fact that when I work beyond my understanding, I have moved past the effective range of analytical and rational processes. My confidence in the initial image allows me to realize the work through an intuitive process," says Lopez.
With an educational background in computer science, mathematics, and philosophy, Chuck received a BA in Philosophy from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1995, and a Master of Fine Arts from Alfred University in Alfred, New York, in 1999. Lopez has been involved with Pilchuck Glass School since 1994 as a volunteer, student, summer staff member, teaching assistant, and Emerging Artist in Residence. In addition, he worked as the Glass Studio Technician at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle from 1999 to 2003. Lopez currently resides in Seattle, Washington, where he teaches and continues to pursue his work. The blown glass components of the sculptures presented were completed during the artist's recent residency at Wheaton Village in New Jersey.
Boundless will be on display at Vetri International Glass-Seattle through November 30th.
