"Gathered Vessels"

Exhibition Dates: November 1 - 30, 2007
Artist Reception: Thursday November 1st, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Vetri International Glass is pleased to present Washington glass artist Glenn Lyons in his exhibition Gathered Forms: Natural Vessels. The show will feature a collection of eleven intricately flameworked glass sake sets inspired by organic elements--bamboo, gourds, and hollow tree trunks--as well as the simple, universal function of the vessel.

In this series, Lyons explores the allure of nature through his use of organic forms and rich, autumnal colors. He describes his sake sets saying: "My work is designed to be used, to be handled and poured from and brought to the lips." Just as the process of flameworking requires a close relationship between the artist and his work, Lyons' sake sets are to be enjoyed intimately for their delicate forms and fine detail.

The vessels that make up Lyons' sake sets demonstrate his fascination with the careful reproduction of natural forms. To create each piece, the artist starts by heating sections of borosilicate glass tubing with his torch, producing his earthy colors by placing measured amounts of colored borosilicate frit into the clear glass tubing. Once heated, the colored frit melts into a smooth coating on the interior of the tubing that is then blown and manipulated to create the final form. It has taken Lyons years to develop and perfect many of his self-taught techniques, but his creativity and efforts are evident in his finished product.

Glenn Lyons has been working with his hands in a number of different crafts and trades throughout his life: cabinet making, fly tying, and jewelry design as well as glassblowing and flameworking. Lyons was first introduced to glass in 1995 when he enrolled in a glassblowing course at the Seattle Glass Blowing Studio. He has continued his studies at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, WA where he studied flameworking under Emilio Santini. Today, Lyons lives and works in Port Townsend, WA where he and his wife run their own shop, Summer House Design, and Lyons continues his explorations with glass.

Glenn Lyons' "Gathered Forms" will be on display through November 30th, 2007.
