"Regeneration"
Exhibition Dates: October 1 - 28, 2007
(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is pleased to present local glass artists Jeremy Newman and Allison Ciancibelli in their first exhibition with the gallery. Regeneration, will include more than twenty blown glass forms inspired by the cycles of destruction and regrowth as seen in forests' natural fire cycles. The exhibition will also feature an installation of pieces grouped together to create the visual effect of a burning landscape as well as a selection of mixed media works in which the artists integrate found objects and reclaimed materials with their sculpture.
Using warm colors and strong abstract imagery, the work in this exhibition incorporates all aspects of the forest fire cycle. The long, vertical black markings suggest a group of blackened trees towering over the charred and barren earth. While phases of destruction and decay typically seem bereft of beauty, the artists recognize the inherent value of all aspects of nature, and they successfully capture that sentiment in their work.
In order to create each one of a kind piece, Jeremy and Allison incorporate traditional glassblowing skills together with woodworking and metalworking. Their simple, earthy forms serve as blank slates for their abstract, narrative imagery created by layering colors of glass and adding frit, powdered glass, and steel fibers. Finally, the surface is acid-etched, giving the finished piece its soft, matte finish and stone-like appearance. In their new mixed media sculptures, Jeremy and Allison introduce found objects, reclaimed steel, and wood. According to the artists, "We use cultural artifacts as a way of exploring our relationship with the land and to remind us of our interconnection with nature, with each other, and with our collective past."
Jeremy Newman and Allison Ciancibelli are a husband and wife team that makes up Twisp River Glass. Jeremy has been blowing glass since 1997 when he apprenticed under Garth Mudge at the Glassworks Studio in Estes Park, CO. He continued his studies under Chuck Lopez, David Minetti, and Kimberly Haugh at the Pratt Fine Art Center in Seattle, WA. Allison has been working and collaborating with Jeremy since the inception of their studio in 2001. The couple's studio is housed in an old barn on their farm near the Twisp River in northern Washington where they continue to be inspired by the rural mountain valley that surrounds them.
Jeremy Newman and Allison Ciancibelli's "Regeneration" will be on display through October 28th, 2007.
