"vo loo 'me"

Exhibition Dates: May 1 - 27, 2007
Artist Reception: Thursday May 3rd, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is pleased to present a solo exhibition featuring new work by Seattle glass artist Paul Cunningham. Vol oo 'me (a phonetic representation of the Italian pronunciation of volume) presents a variety of Cunningham's elegant, blown glass vessels, created in celebration of the ancient Venetian glassblowing techniques which the artist has cherished, and gradually perfected, throughout the course of his career.

The process of blowing glass involves inflating each piece with air, yet many artists do not consider the quality of volume while designing their work. Cunningham has incorporated the idea of expansion and fullness into his designs, resulting in a sensuous, soulful body of work.

The pieces included in the exhibition spotlight some of Cunningham's favorite Italian techniques. His Sciarpa (scarf) and Sinuosi (twist) vessels are incalmo pieces - two or more separate bubbles of glass that are opened into cup shapes and joined together end to end, resulting in wide bands or sections of color. The patterns in the Cuscino (pillow), sentiero (footpath), and flanella (flannel) vases are created by fusing colorful disks (murrine) of glass together on a plate, and then picking them up on a bubble or disk of glass, before they are blown into their final forms.

Paul Cunningham was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, and began his career in glass in 1984, at the Glass Eye in Seattle. A short stint in the shipping department led to a spot in front of the furnace, where he has been ever since. He has been fortunate enough to work along side many skilled glass artists, including Lino Tagliapietra, Dale Chihuly, Dan Dailey, and Dick Marquis. He credits his friends and contemporaries Dante Marioni and Benjamin Moore for making a career in glass possible. Cunningham currently enjoys blowing glass at his own studio in Seattle, as well as teaching and showing his work internationally.

Paul Cunningham's "vo loo 'me" will be on display through May 27th, 2007.
