"Vestiges of Galactic Craft"
Exhibition Dates: August 7th - August 27th, 2003
(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is proud to present a solo exhibition for Seattle glass artist, Rik Allen. The show, entitled, "Vestiges of Galactic Craft" is on display August 7th through August 27th. Allen's show will feature 8 works of glass art including rockets that exude an air of antiquated science. An Artist's reception will be held on Thursday August 7th from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Vetri, located one block north of the Seattle Art Museum.
Rik's objective with this body of work is to impart a quality of antique spacecraft and scientific experiment. The artist states, "When I imagine these pieces I think of them as devices you might find in a very old science lab that was just recently unearthed. Rockets that have been used for some unknown purpose and have traveled to some unascertained distant planet". Most of the work is assembled with a mix of materials, including glass, copper, brass, lead, wire and various found articles that achieve the archaic texture and appeal that Allen is seeking.
Born in Providence, RI, Rik Allen has a B.A. in Anthropology from Pierce College, NH. Currently Rik is working with William Morris and has for the past 8 years. Mr. Allen also was the studio and cold shop coordinator at Pilchuck Glass School (WA) from 1995-2001. Along side Joey Cahill, in 1998 at Pilchuck, Allen was involved with the co-creation and production of the theatrical rendition of "The Story of Glass". His experience extends to the animation sequences for the film, "Okenka", 2001 which was featured at the Seattle Film Festival and other film festivals around the country. Mr. Allen's work is held privately around the world and publicly at Boeing headquarters in Chicago.
