"Bespoke"

Exhibition Dates: August 1 - 26, 2007
Artist Reception: Thursday August 2th, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

(Seattle, WA) Vetri International Glass is pleased to present glass artist Scott Benefield in his exhibition Bespoke. This exhibition features twelve original, intricately patterned vessels that express the artist's interest in the contrast between order and chaos through his application of highly complex patterns.

The word bespoke is a British term meaning "custom made" or "made to order," calling to mind the value of artisanship as opposed to mass-production. Although Benefield has a history making serial production pieces, his work in this exhibition is a conscious break from that tradition.

Benefield emphasizes the handmade quality of his new work by highlighting the tension between control and chaos through his disruption of regular, well-ordered patterns. According to the artist, "Taking that perfection as a starting point and then rearranging it É suggests a new perspective on the idea of regularity and control." In order to create each unique vessel, Benefield starts by blowing intricately patterned glass into small rondels that are then cut into square tiles. These pieces are then reheated and blown into the final form giving the finished vessel its elaborate, mosaic-like patterning. Although it is a time intensive process, it is necessary in order to create the sophisticated patterns seen in BenefieldŐs work.

Scott Benefield received his MFA from Ohio State University and continued his education at Pilchuck Glass School and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. He has served on the Glass Art Society board of directors, serving as president from 2000 through 2001. He was a founder and partner of Studio Inferno in New Orleans, and in 1996 he started Isola Glass on Camano Island, WA where he continues to work today. Benefield is a recipient of a Fulbright-Hays grant and a Creative Glass Center of America fellowship.

Scott Benefield's "Bespoke" will be on display through August 26th, 2007.
