Benefield emphasizes the handmade quality of his new work by highlighting the tension between control and chaos through his disruption of regular, well-ordered patterns. According to the artist, "Taking that perfection as a starting point and then rearranging it suggests a new perspective on the idea of regularity and control." In order to create each unique vessel, Benefield starts by blowing intricately patterned glass into small rondels that are then cut into square tiles. These pieces are then reheated and blown into the final form giving the finished vessel its elaborate, mosaic-like patterning. Although it is a time intensive process, it is necessary in order to create the sophisticated patterns seen in Benefield's work.
