The purpose of the Big Joy Project is to create more joy in the world by inspiring people to "follow your own weird", using the life and work of poet and filmmaker James Broughton as wild, creative, self-realized examples.
James Broughton (1913-1999) was a pioneer of experimental film-making, a central player in California's creative literary renaissance, a bard of sensuality and spirituality, and a preacher of Big Joy. His poetic films combine mythological imagery, experimental visions, path-breaking nudity, and life lessons. Considered by many to be the father of West Coast experimental film, Broughton's 23 poetic films won him a lifetime achievement award by the American Film Institute.
