Mark Roth began the Erosion series with the idea of replicating eroded stone shapes into glass forms. Inspired by water, wind and glacial erosion, Mark wanted to abrade and carve blown glass into something more individually expressive. Each piece has horizontal swaths of color to emphasize form and carving. The colors highlight extrusions and indentations, and Mark carves into and through color to evoke sensory images of textures and patterns found in nature.
-wind, water, currents, swirling sand, grinding carving-
From birth (fire) to formation (blown piece), to erosion formed by the elements, cold working glass mimics the forces of nature on stone. Intrigued by nature's aesthetics, Mark wants this work to look weathered in order to express a sense of place and history.
