Lewis "Buster" Simpson joined the Pilchuck Glass School in 1971, as one of the founding members. He had met Dale Chihuly earlier that year at the Rhode Island School of Design, and was then already a well-known environmental and installation artist. Simpson inspired the artists at Pilchuck, and has continued to do so, even in recent years, as a visiting artist-in-residence.
His Bedspring Cone Cups, created with the assistance of Therman Statom, serve as lasting mementos of the very experimental first days of Pilchuck.
