TACOMA, June 19th, 2010 - Vetri Glass in Tacoma is pleased to present a special exhibition showcasing the work of two inspiring young artists from the Hilltop Artists in Residence Tacoma (HART) program. HART, founded in 1994, provides a creative outlet for at-risk and disenfranchised youth in Tacoma. The show will be on display from June 19th – August 8th, 2010, with an opening reception on Saturday, June 19th from 5 - 8 pm.
Vetri Glass Tacoma and the Hilltop Artists in Residence have teamed up to provide Hilltop students an experience with the business side of the art world -- a subject often overlooked in arts education programs. After meeting with the gallery, students were asked to send portfolios to the gallery proposing an exhibition of their work, an intimidating process for artists at any stage in their career. Dylan Buffler and Chris Downing are the two dedicated artists selected for this season's exhibition.
Dylan Buffler’s series of sleek, opaque white vases serve as sculptural canvases for layers of bright graffiti characters. Buffler, who works alongside his father in the family skate shop, brings his interest in skate culture into his artwork by using highly stylized figures and thick lines made with a specialized glass marker. At just thirteen years old, Buffler is the youngest artist to exhibit his work at Vetri Glass.
Chris Downing’s Tea Set is a fantastic example of the artist’s infatuation with bold color and pattern. Downing has worked in glass for two years and currently works on the production team at HART. Playing with line and form, Downing successfully creates a vibrant tea set. Round form with sharp accents, rich color with a clear, optic handle, these are the elements Downing combines in his series to achieve a subtle dynamism. Downing is a recent graduate of Wilson High School and plans on opening his own hot shop in the future where he can continue developing his production line.
