David Calles is a glass blower; originally from Argentina. At sixteen he went to live in London, England between 1973 and 1979, he did his "O" and "A" levels. In 1980 he spent six months in Mexico where he learned to work silver. Back in Argentina he trained and worked in time and motion in a factory, which made radiators. Between 1983 and 1990 he mostly lived in Providence, RI, where he got a BA in Arts from Brown University (1990). After graduating he spent a year in Albuquerque, NM working in jewelry. He came to Canada in 1993. Attended Sheridan College between 1994 and 1999, majoring in glass.
David came to Victoria in 2001 to start his own glass blowing studio, Miramontes Artworks, located in ten-mile point, Victoria, BC. Opening in 2007, his studio is a place where other glass artists can also come to make their work and where non-glass artists and designers can come to have work made for them.
He expresses himself through the exploration of color, form and traditional Italian cane techniques. In this series "Pimpollos" David attempts to mimic a little shock of color often found in nature and transport it into people's indoor spaces.
