Jack Spivey started flame working in 1995 with a group of friends while attending the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. They began experimenting by learning from each other and sharing ideas. Over the last ten years most of his flame working friends have gone in different directions.
Jack went on to take classes to further his knowledge of glass. His first class was with James Minson, 1998 at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, Washington. Other classes include Emilio Santini, 2001 and Cesare Toffolo, 2002 at Penland School of Arts and Crafts in North Carolina and Shane Fero, 2005 at Eugene Glass School. During the winter of 2004 he had the opportunity to do an apprenticeship with Cesare Toffolo in Murano, Italy. He has also assisted various teachers for the Eugene Glass School.
Jack often contributes to schools by donating work to various auctions. Aside from the schools that he has attended, he has donated to Pilchuck Glass School and West Sound Academy.
